Setting down community roots
Fresh vegetables, herbs and berries can be found flourishing at Alexandra’s Bounty Garden on Simcoe Street North in Oshawa, a community space currently maintained by the Oshawa and Durham Region Métis Council (ODRMC) and its many volunteers.
The community garden offers a unique opportunity for Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) citizens to come together, get their hands dirty, and enjoy a connection to land and community.
On lands owned by the Hospital Foundation at Lakeridge Health Hospital, and previously curated by We Grow Foods, the ODRMC took over the garden’s lease in November 2021. However, the council and many MNO citizens have been involved in the garden for years, following a call for volunteers during the early and turbulent days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The outdoor space proved an ideal place for volunteers to gather safely, while also ensuring the local community could later be supplied with fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables. Now, the ODRMC is the official caretaker of the garden, with over 20 volunteers made up of council members, citizens and community members.
The local Knights of Columbus offered their support, becoming a sponsor and helping to manage the daily activities. Thanks to this sponsorship, and funding from the Métis Nation of Ontario Cultural Commission (MNOCC) the council was able to cover expenses and keep the garden in bloom.
A small grant was also provided by the MNO Lands, Resources, and Consultation branch for seeds and soil. The money also purchased items for “Three Sister Soup,” including corn, squash, and beans. Volunteers are always welcome to contribute to the Community Garden. And “community hours” are available to any interested student. For more information contact: Oshawadurhammetiscouncil@gmail.com
